The Process

Where do I start and how do I proceed?

1. Design the kitchen

2. Choose the products & contractor(s)

3. Pricing

4. Order product

5. Execute the job

Design - The best and simplest way to start is to get a kitchen design done by a kitchen designer at a cabinet showroom or design service like The Cabinet Guy.

Here's why: The kitchen layout - meaning the layout of the cabinets and appliances - determines all the other costs. Until you have that you don't know the countertop size, the quantity of flooring, handles, tile, etc. that you will need. It is like going to an architect to design your house before you talk to a builder. The only difference is the kitchen design work is usually free or substanially lower than an architect (see the Design Services page .

Pricing - Once the design is done to your satisfaction you then proceed to price the:

  • Countertops
  • Appliances
  • Flooring
  • Lighting
  • Plumbing fixtures
  • Accents (backsplash, wallsplash, paint, wallpaper, etc.)
  • Handles and/or knobs
  • Windows, doors, etc.
  • Construction labor
  • Plumbing work
  • Electrical work
  • HVAC work
  • Installation labor
  • Permit fees

Order the Product - Depending on the products you choose it can take anywhere from 1 day to 12 weeks to get the product.

Execute the Job - Some people choose to do all the legwork themselves and act as their own contrator. Others choose to hire a contractor to pull it all together. Either way, you will have a lot of decisions to make.
